The Honolulu Festival Washington Place Speech

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen;

It is always difficult to speak after such an eloquent and TALL speaker as Governor Lingle. Aloha!

It is my privilege to be invited to the kick off party of the 16th Honolulu Festival at this beautiful historic mansion called the Washington Place today. I would like to extend my appreciation for the gracious hospitality that the Governor grants us, in opening up this most prestigious venue for us to celebrate the 16th Honolulu Festival, the signature event that the City of Honolulu , for that matter, the State of Hawaii can proudly boast.

I said that the Honolulu Festival is the signature event in Honolulu or Hawaii . According to a local news paper, the Honolulu Advertiser, the Festival brings in 5000 tourists from outside of the State, creates 10 million dollars worth, and draws 70, 000 locals. With this magnitude, the Festival has been successfully carried out over the past many years.

We at the Japanese Consulate are very proud to take part in the Festival by having a kickoff party last night at my place where we warmed up ourselves for the big event and co-hosting two Academy Award winning movies showing in the Festival. The first film “Departures” directed by Mr. Yojiro Takita, won the Best Foreign Language Film Award at Oscars in 2009. The other film “Hula Girls” won the Japanese Academy Award in 2007. I hope you will take your time out and enjoy the movies.

時間の節約のために日本語で話します。日本から参加された皆様、ホノルル・フェスティバルにようこそ。今回で１６回を迎える当フェスティバルは、年々拡大の一途を辿り、ホノルルを代表するイベントの一つになっています。主催者にお聞きしたところでは、今年の特徴は、ボランティアの皆さんの関与が深まった点であるそうです。これまでもボランティアの方々のご支援がフェスティバル運営に活かされていたわけですが、本年は、ボランティアの方々が中心となってフェスティバル運営を行うということです。ここにご参集の皆さんがそれぞれのお立場でフェスティバルの成功のため協力され、フェスティバルを成功に導いて頂けたら大変ありがたいと思います。もう一つの特徴は、多文化主義が定着し、いかなる意味においても国際的なフェスティバルになってきたことです。元々は、日本のお祭りを再現することにより文化交流を図ることから始まったホノルル・フェスティバルですが、今では、フィリピン、豪州、中国、韓国、台湾など太平洋沿岸国の文化を代表する参加者も加わり、パン・パシフィックのお祭りであるとの性格が強くなってきています。ホノルルを舞台に多彩な文化が主張し合い、多民族が参加し合い調和する。そんな場をホノルル・フェスティバルは我々に提供してくれています。
