Kamo‘s Remarks at the Welcome Back Reception for JET Participants October
7, 2010 今晩は。Aloha!
Good evening! Welcome back! My wife and I
would like to extend a warm welcome to JET returnees! It is our pleasure to
open our home for you in order to appreciate your work in Japan. In the past
two years or so, you were in Japan and engaged in the challenging task of
improving the English language literacy among Japanese high school students.
I hope you have done your work well. Did I meet you before?
Maybe not. I have been here for about a year by now. Many of you spent two
years in Japan. I came here, while you were in Japan. So nice to meet you! You know I have been
entertaining many dreams. One of them is to go to Japan as a JET. I know
that the Japanese government will never hire me. But I go to Japan, and
assigned perhaps to a small school in a remote area and I will teach my
students a Japanese English. Well, I am envious of you who did that in
Japan. I am curious how you rate
your work. You did a good job or bad job? They say Japanese are poor at
English. Do you think so? If you think so, what make us so? How
can we improve our English? Now that you were directly
involved with the issue for some time, you are in a position to voice your
opinions. You may contribute to solving the issue by getting out your
thoughts on this. I would highly appreciate it if you could email us at the
consulate or the school you were assigned in Japan your opinions and
recommendations. This evening, we have the
pleasure of having a wide range of people from the local community who may
be of your interest. They are your resource persons. Please enjoy
interacting with them and get updated what is going on in Honolulu now. I wish you the best of luck
for your future endeavors in Hawaii. Enjoy the party this evening. It is
yours.
