Consul General's Speeches

Consul General Kamo’s Remarks at the 30th KZOO Karaoke Contest

November 7, 2010

Good Morning!

I was so nervous and got preoccupied with the song I sang just now. I am sorry but I was completely blacked out. I got lost where I stood and lost completely the words and music. This is the first time that I sang a song before this huge audience, this large crowd.

I tried to sing a song based on the traditional “Hore-hore Bushi” that was sung many years ago by Japanese workers in the sugarcane plantations. They came to Hawaii from Yokohama and toiled the land. But they found a consolation in singing Hore-hore Bushi songs in expressing their emotions, joys and sorrows of their daily lives.

I thought it was timely that I introduced a Hore-hore Bushi song as we celebrate the 125th anniversary this year for the first Kanyaku Imin (First Government-Contracted Immigrants from Japan)

Well, I thank you KZOO for giving me a chance to sing a Hore-hore Bushi of my own making. I appreciate KZOO for serving the local community for many ways, but in particular, by giving such an excellent popular entertainment for many years. In fact this is their 30th Karaoke Singing Contest. This is one of the most authentic Karaoke contests held in Honolulu, thanks to many people from Japan, ranging from professional singers, music composers and judges.

This is my firm belief that KZOO will be serving the community with renewed strength and inspirations in the years to come. Let’s enjoy our Karaoke Singing Contest!
Mahalo!
