Consul General's Speeches

CG Kamo’s Remarks

At the Awa Odori Demonstration

March 15, 2010

University of Hawaii

Good Morning everyone and Aloha!

On behalf of the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu , I am pleased to welcome the Association of Naruto Awa Odori Promotion to Hawaii . I would also like to offer my sincere gratitude to the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Hawaii as well as the College of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature also a t the University of Hawaii, the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce, the Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Nippon Club, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii and the Hawaii Senior Life Enrichment Association for attending today’s dance performance.

The Association of Naruto Awa Odori Promotion came to Honolulu to take part in the Honolulu Festival that ended yesterday. They made an extra trip to the Manoa campus today to give demonstration before us. They consist of 28 members coming from Tokushima Prefecture in Japan . Awa is the old name of Tokushima , which is both beautiful and attractive blessed with nature and culture.

As you can guess, we are going to be entertained by a Power Point presentation “Welcome to Tokushima ” by a former JET who worked in Tokushima Prefecture . She said she had a good time in Tokushima . She is an ideal person to talk about Tokushima , what they have, or what they are proud of. I am really looking forwards to the demonstration, for Awa Odori is one of the most famous dances in Japan . I am sure they will entertain us, Hawaiians included, tremendously, as Hawaii has a long tradition of its own dance called hula. Cultural interchange between Japan and Hawaii can be best done through dances. I am certain that today’s performance will prove this. It is exciting and a lot of fun.

I would like to thank once again the Association of Naruto Awa Odori Promotion for their appearance here today.

Thank you very much.
