Good Morning!
Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu.
It
is great to get our here in the beautiful Hawaii Okinawa Center to
join you in celebrating the start of the year 2012 and enjoying the
New Year Banquet. First of all, my hearty congratulations go to
incoming president, Mr. Cyrus Tamashiro, and other incoming officers
and thanks to outgoing president, Mr. Norman Nakasone and other
out-going officers!
As
we all know, last year was quite a year. The great earthquake and
tsunami hit the Tohoku region of Japan. In the aftermath of the
great tragedy, Hawaii showed an incredible generosity and sympathy
that encouraged Japanese tremendously. The Okinawa community was no
exception. Rather they spearheaded in raising funds for Japan Relief
campaign. I would like to express my profound gratitude to the HUOA
supporting the Aloha for Japan campaign and serving as a collection
point of donations, and to the organization’s members and friends.
We understand that as of last May 31, almost $37,000 was collected.
This is not a small contribution! It is a big, big aloha you sent to
us in Japan. Thank you!
It
is always the case with the Okinawa people, but you are very good at
getting united together within your community. This banquet is a
fine example. I see so many people getting out here and enjoying the
traditional taiko performance and dances. Your proud Okinawa
tradition has been passed down on to the next generation young
Okinawans. I congratulate to you on your cultural vibrancy and laud
your commitment to preserving Okinawa heritage.
I
wish the Hawaii United Okinawa Association continued success in all
endeavors and events in 2012. Thank you!
