Remarks
at the Japan-America Society of Hawaii’s
Annual
New Year’s Reception in 2012 at Washington Place
Yoshi
Kamo, Consul General of Japan
Good
Evening! Akemeshite Omedeto Gozaimasu. We have had a wonderful
Kagamiwai ceremony and are all ready to get drunk. I don’t want to
further keep you waiting for enjoying the joy of sake before Kampai
by delivering a long speech here. But as we have just heard Governor
Abercrombie commenting something nice about Japan, JASH and his
commitment to further our relationship, I really would like to
reciprocate some words that came to my mind while listening to his
remarks.
First
of all, I want to say that my wife and I are very happy and excited
to be invited to this annual Washington Place event that breaks open
the series of JASH programs in the year 2012. It is a privilege for
us that JASH is holding this event at this prestigious Washington
Place thanks to Governor Abercrombie. So my first thank you should
go to Governor Abercrombie for his allowing JASH hosting this annual
event at Honolulu’s beautiful landmark.
We
all know that Governor Abercrombie just delivered his State of the
State Address two days ago at the State Legislature. He was very
smart avoid mentioning the controversial commuter rail in his
address. Instead he dwelled on the subject of our senior advisory
council member, Governor Ariyoshi a couple of times. Governor
Abercrombie lauded Governor Ariyoshi’s foresight for the
desirability of sustainability and environmental considerations in
developing the economy. It is Hawaii’s agenda to introduce
eco-friendly industries, including renewable energy and clean
technology. Governor Ariyoshi was one of the forefathers to
underline the necessity of these for Hawaii’s future. I am most
encouraged and impressed that Governor Abercrombie made it clear
that he attached importance to the policies advocated and pursued by
Governor Ariyoshi. Governor Abercrombie, we will follow you. Thank
you for reminding us of the invaluable contribution that Governor
Ariyoshi made in educating us the importance of securing the future
sustainable growth in Hawaii.
Last,
I would like to thank JASH for their part in the response to the
aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. JASH was
instrumental in operating the statewide Japan Relief fundraising
campaign entitled “ Aloha for Japan” and the youth exchange
program called “ Rainbow for Japan Kids”. On both fronts, JASH
showed their strength and ability to get the job done well and
accountable. I wish JASH the best of luck in their endeavors in
2012.
With
these thoughts, now, may I propose a toast to Governor Abercrombie
and JASH? Kampai!
