The Japanese respect for nature is emphasized.  This video talks about the endangered species and their protection, whale-watching, and the present push to control and diminish air pollution.

This video shows the different steps to recycling in Japan.  There is a program that is getting senior citizens involved in the recycling of paper.  There are composting systems being developed to revitalize and fertilize soil and to grow organic produce.

An ex-whaler changes from a whaler to a whale-watching enthusiast.  The town of Muroto nurses a sick whale and returns her to the sea.  As a result, the town revamps their love of whales.

Professor Akira Miyawaki from Yokohama National University is interviewed.  Prof. Miyawaki was instrumental in developing a personal reforestation program on campus as well as throughout Japan.

Japan is experiencing the popularity of bird watching.  In 1978, a wild bird park was created at an old airport facility.  The Wild Bird Society of Japan promotes education, research and the preservation of habitats.  In 1981, the Society created the first wild bird sanctuary in Japan.

When there is a severe winter on the Shiretoko peninsula in Hokkaido, the ocean is covered with an ice floe.  Various animals come on the ice floe, making this peninsula a unique gathering place of the northern creatures.
NA016 The Crane Man of Kushiro - Saving the Japanese Crane  (45 min.)
Approximately 400 Japanese cranes inhabit the Kushiro marshlands of eastern Hokkaido.  At Kushiro Japanese Crane National Park, Ryoji Takahashi has helped to raise the cranes for the last 30 years.  The program introduces the heartwarming relationship between a man and the beautiful Japanese cranes.
NA017 Hiroshima - A New Threat - A-Bomb Water Dedication     (45 min.)
A-Bomb Water Dedication is a ritual held at the Peace Park in Hiroshima on August 6th every year.  The program introduces the present situation of the 16 water sites used in the decision, and shows the important relationship between water and people.
NA018 River Without Water - Journey to Oigawa River     (45 min.)
Oigawa River, once renowned for its abundant flow, has now become a river without water.  The program travels from the estuary to the upper stream of Oigawa River in both the dry and typhoon seasons in summer and autumn, and follows the history of the river and its people.
NA019 Fight for Survival: The Fish Owl of Northern Japan  (56 min.)   1993
The Blakiston’s fish owl which lives in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, is one the many endangered species.  NHK produced this program which unveils for the first time, the life of the fish owl.
NA020 Sables in the Northern Land     (37 min.)
The winter forest of Sarobetsu in Northern Hokkaido is the home of many sables.  Sables are nocturnal but not much else has previously been known about them.  Photographer Toshihiko Fujimoto took 2 years of camera work to successfully capture the behavior the sables in their northern habitat.
