Japanese and U.S. Energy Experts to visit
Okinawa and Hawaii for Okinawa-Hawaii Clean and Efficient Energy Partnership
Honolulu, August 25, 2010 – On June 17, 2010, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE), the Prefecture of Okinawa and the State of Hawaii signed a Memorandum of Cooperation creating the Hawaii-Okinawa Partnership on Clean and Efficient Energy Development and Deployment. To form this partnership, officials from METI, the U.S. DOE, the Prefecture of Okinawa, and the State of Hawaii, along with Japanese and U.S. energy experts, that include university representatives, will visit Okinawa and Hawaii from August 22 to September 4. They will tour energy related facilities, exchange information with industry and academic representatives on energy policies and make proposals on specific ways to promote the Okinawa-Hawaii Clean and Efficient Energy Partnership. The experts will also attend the 2010 Asia Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo held at the Hawaii Convention Center from August 30 to September 2. During the visit to Okinawa and Hawaii, the energy experts will tour existing energy efficient facilities, renewable energy installation, smart grid/city demonstration projects and facilities. In addition, they will hold discussions on various subjects such as energy related research currently being carried out by corporations, universities and related institutions, energy efficient building technology and electric vehicle infrastructure technology. The energy experts are also expected to make proposals on the ways the Okinawa-Hawaii Clean and Efficient Energy Partnership would be developed. The energy experts will be in Hawaii from August 28 to September 4. The Okinawa-Hawaii Clean and Efficient Energy Partnership is part of an agreement reached in November 2009 between the Prime Minister of Japan and the President of the United States and was officially signed by METI, U.S. DOE, the Prefecture of Okinawa and the State of Hawaii on June 17, 2010, in Tokyo. Working together, Japan and the U.S. hope to develop a world model for sustainable clean energy that could be applied to island nations.
