Utsushi( the art of copying ) Symposium Remarks by CG
Kamo
October
12, 2010
Distinguished
participants,
Ladies and
gentlemen:
Her Imperial
Highness Princess Akiko:
It is my great honor and
privilege to be invited here this morning to participate in a unique
symposium on Utsushi: the art of copying at this beautiful Korean
Auditorium. The theme of the symposium Utsushi is by no means a
common language even among museum goers. But it played an important
part in the context of Asian art history, particularly in Japan, as
the Japanese word Utsushi suggests.
It is indeed gratifying to see
so many scholars and art historians gathering here from both sides
of the Pacific to shed new light on this challenging theme. As
Japan’s consul, it is my honor and privilege to welcome Princess
Akiko and other Japanese scholars to this stimulating event. I also
see familiar faces, Dr. Huey, Dr. Little and Dr. Satsuma and some
others who are instrumental in keeping Japanese and other Asian
culture and artistic heritage intact with so much vibrancy in Hawaii. With your active
participation, I am confident that this symposium will achieve what
is originally intended and enhance our enjoyment of Japanese Art
with a renewed appreciation for Utsushi.
Taking this opportunity, I would
like to thank Prof. Kameda and other organizers of this symposium.
Without their dedication and commitment this symposium would not
have been possible. My appreciation goes to University of Hawaii,
Manoa, and other sponsors for their role to make this happen.
Mahaho
nui loa. Thank you very much.
