Dramatization from the Manyoshu; The Sea, the Clouds, the Moon, and the Stars

   On October 30, Consul General and Mrs. Misawa witnessed a performance titled “Dramatization from the Manyoshu; The Sea, the Clouds, the Moon, and the Stars” at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. After a lecture on the classic writing system of Manyogana and the Manyoshu poem collection by the translator of the performance, Professor Robert Huey of the University of Hawaii East Asian Languages & Literature Department, and the  performance’s original author, Professor Makoto Ueno of Nara University, actress Keiko Matsuzaka and students from the University of Hawaii performed a recitation of the Manyoshu poems. The recitation was done in both Japanese and English, and was followed by a finale in which all participants were invited to read the waka poem that served as the theme of the afternoon.
