Cherry Tree Planting Ceremony in Wahiawa

   On February 17, a cherry tree planting ceremony was held at the Helemano Plantation on the outskirts of Wahiawa in conjunction with the unveiling of a stone monument to identify the trees.

   Many guests attended the ceremony, including Former U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka, Former U.S. Senator; Ms. Susanna F. Cheung, CEO of Helemano Plantation; members of the Cherry Alley Committee; Representative Marcus Oshiro; Professor Tetsuo Koyama, Director Emeritus of the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden; representatives of the Tokyo-Shibuya Rotary Club; and Consul General and Mrs. Misawa.

   The Kochizakura sapling planted at the ceremony was selected by Professor Koyama. Cherry trees of the same family were planted in Waimea on the Big Island in 2012, but it is the first of its kind to be planted on Oahu.
