Consulate Activities Related to the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake: Consul General Misawa’s Appearance on Local Radio
On the evening of April 26, Consul General Misawa joined Mr. Cyrus Tamashiro, President of the United Japanese Society of Hawaii, and others on a KZOO broadcast to provide a special report on the Kumamoto Earthquake.
Consul General Misawa gave an overview of the earthquake situation, including an update on the current conditions in the disaster area. He explained that the majority of the damage was sustained when the two class-7 earthquakes successively struck Kumamoto Prefecture, and detailed recovery efforts undertaken by the government. A class-7 earthquake is defined by the Japan Meteorological Agency as the state in which “It is impossible to remain standing or move without crawling. People may be thrown through the air.”
Consul General also expressed his gratitude for letters of condolence received from Governor David Ige and others in Hawaii, and related information on the collection of donations to aid relief efforts for the 2016 Kumamoto Prefecture Earthquake as is posted on the consulate’s homepage.
