"Tsukimi no En" (Moon-Viewing Party), an Introduction to Japanese Sake and Cuisine

On November 18, the Consulate and Kokusai Sake Kai (International Sake Association) co-hosted an event to introduce Japanese sake and cuisine, the "Tsukimi no En" (Moon-Viewing Party), at the Official Residence of the Consul General. Kokusai Sake Kai was founded in Hawaii in 1987 with the goal of spreading information on sake and sake culture. Since 2001, they have regularly held the U.S. National Sake Appraisal and, for more casual connoisseurs, tasting events like the Joy of Sake in order to promote sake in the United States. This organization was awarded the Foreign Minister's Commendation in 2012 in recognition of their contributions to mutual understanding between Japan and the United States and their promotion of international friendship and goodwill. The day of the event featured a lecture on Japanese sake and cuisine, dozens of varieties of sake, and a wide selection of Japanese foods that pair well with sake, such as grilled mackerel sushi. The event proved to be an excellent opportunity for guests to experience the depth and richness of the culture of sake and Japanese cuisine. Guests were also treated to a powerful performance of Nihon Buyo by Takamasa Fujima, a Japanese traditional dancer who has performed on Hawaii Island and at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
