Hawaii High School Students Participate in the High School Student Summit “World Tsunami Awareness Day” in Wakayama Representing the U.S.

The Third “World Tsunami Awareness Day” High School Student Summit meeting was held in Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture from October 31 to November 1, 2018.  The participants for the 2018 Summit included high school students from 48 countries (135 high school students from Japan and 244 high school students from overseas). Students from Waianae High School participated in the Summit representing the United States. After returning to Hawaii on November 2, the students visited Governor Ige and First Lady Mrs. Dawn Amano-Ige to share their experience and what steps to take next. At the Summit, the student’s discussions centered around the themes of “protecting lives from disasters”, “preparing from disasters” and “surviving disasters”. The goal of the Summit is to encourage the students to actively engage in minimizing the impacts of disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis as well as to foster future leaders in the field of disaster risk reduction.
