Unveiling Ceremony of the Gannenmono Monument
2018 marked the 150th anniversary since the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in Hawaii. In its honor, a stone monument was built in the Japanese Garden at Honolulu Hale and an unveiling ceremony was held on April 18th. Governor and First Lady Ige, Managing Director Amemiya, Former Governor Ariyoshi, and Consul General Ito attended along with other community leaders. The stone was donated by Yokohama City where the first Japanese immigrants (Gannenmono) boarded to emigrate.
