Consulate Activities

On June 20, a ceremony was held at the Official Residence of the Consul General to honor this year's recipients of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship. The Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation was established in 1959 with the cooperation of groups from the Nikkei community in Hawaii, the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, and the Japanese economic community at large in order to commemorate the marriage of then Crown Prince Akihito (now the Emperor Emeritus) and to celebrate the imperial couple's visit to Hawaii. The purpose of the foundation is to promote mutual understanding and goodwill between the United States and Japan by offering scholarships for graduate studies to students in Japan and Hawaii. This year’s recipients of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship are both Ph.D candidates at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa:  Mr. Masaki Eguchi, a Ph.D candidate in Second Language Studies, and Ms. Francesca Pizarro, a Ph.D candidate in Japanese Literature at the East Asian Literature Department who will be doing her research in Japan at Tsukuba University.
