Hawaii High School Students Represent U.S. in 2019 Hokkaido Student Summit “World Tsunami Awareness Day”
The 4th “World Tsunami Awareness Day” High School Student Summit meeting was held in Sapporo City, Hokkaido Prefecture from September 10 to 11, 2019. The participants for the 2019 Summit included high school students from 43 countries (521 students). Students from Kaiser High School participated in the Summit representing the United States. At the Summit, the student’s discussions centered around the themes of “obtaining knowledge; passing lessons from the past on to the future,” “increasing awareness; preparedness for disasters and prompt evacuations,” and “working together to recover from disasters; making contributions to the society from the standpoint of the disaster victims and the supporters.” The goal of the Summit is to encourage the students to actively engage in minimizing the impacts of disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis as well as to foster future leaders in the field of disaster risk reduction.
*In 2015, a resolution jointly proposed by 142 countries including Japan on the creation of a World Tsunami
Awareness Day, was adopted by consensus at the United Nations General Assembly.
