Ehime Maru Memorial Ceremony

The memorial service of the Ehime Maru was held by Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) on February 9.

In February 2001, four high school students, two teachers, and three crew members perished after a fishery high school training vessel, the Ehime Maru, sank in a tragic accident.

Since the accident, JASH has held an annual memorial ceremony attended by many guests from Japan, as well as members of the local community. This year, due to the COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings, the ceremony was scaled down.

Consul General Aoki, Hawaii’s Governor David Ige and Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi laid wreaths at the Ehime Maru Memorial and offered silent prayers during a ceremony.
