Visit by Japan Coast Guard Training Vessel Kojima and Consul General Aoki’s Lecture
As part of a deep sea training voyage, the Japan Coast Guard training ship Kojima arrived at Honolulu Harbor on Tuesday, May 31st. After an 11-day visit, Kojima left port to carry out the last leg of its training program on Friday, June 10th.
Kojima is manned by a full crew of 88 personnel, including 47 trainees who just graduated from the Japan Coast Guard Academy in March, 41 crew members and a medical services officer.
Kojima embarked on a deep sea training voyage from its homeport of Kure, Hiroshima on May 6th. As the first leg of its voyage, the vessel visited San Francisco from May 21st to May 25th. Then it proceeded to Honolulu.
After Kojima docked in Honolulu Harbor on May 31st, the Consulate-General of Japan delivered a lecture video on Hawaii and its history with a welcome message from the members of the Hawaii Meijikai, United Japanese Society of Hawaii and the Japan-America Society of Hawaii. On June 4th, Consul General Aoki boarded the ship, greeted the trainees and delivered a lecture, based on his own experience, emphasizing the collaboration between the Japan Coast Guard and Ministry of Foreign Affairs in international cooperation to enhance Maritime Security.
During their stay, the trainees visited the USS Missouri Memorial, and conducted a wreath-laying at the Arizona Memorial on May 31st, and visited the Ehime Maru Memorial to clean the surrounding area and offered flowers on June 7.
Although the members of Japanese-American groups in Hawaii could not board the ship, they gathered at Honolulu Harbor to welcome the trainees and crew when they arrived, and bid them farewell when they departed.
