Deco Sushi Roll Experience Event

The Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu, together with Fukuoka Prefecture and Dean and Deluca Hawaii, held a "Deco Sushi Roll Experience” event for the local community. The purpose of this event was to promote a deeper understanding of Japanese food to the people of Hawaii.

Both Fukuoka Prefecture and Dean and Deluca Hawaii play an important role as a bridge between Japan and Hawaii. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Hawaii and Fukuoka Prefecture. There is a strong bond between the two regions as the ancestors of many Japanese-Americans in Hawaii were originally from Fukuoka Prefecture and the Fukuoka Kenjinkai is very active here as well. The Ariake Nori (seaweed) used in the sushi rolls is a specialty of Fukuoka Prefecture.

Dean and Deluca Hawaii has been in Hawaii since 2016, and has been helping the local economy by promoting Hawaii made products in their stores. Many of these products have been popular with Japanese tourists.

At the event, Consul General Aoki gave a speech explaining the purpose of the event, followed by Mr. Kurauchi, the Honorary Chairman of the Fukuoka Prefecture Association of Japanese Tea Production,  and Mr. Akita, Former Chairman of Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly, introducing Fukuoka Prefecture and its specialty products, Ariake nori (seaweed) and Yame tea, which participants used in this event.

Official Residence Chef Yuta Makino, introduced the history of sushi rolls in Japan. He then demonstrated how to make a "Plumeria Sushi Roll," which he created for this event and participants also had the opportunity to make the sushi. Inspired by the Plumeria flower, Chef Makino created the “Plumeria Sushi Roll” using poke as one of its ingredients. The idea behind this sushi creation was to utilize the local ingredients from both Japan and Hawaii and wrapping them with the Ariake seaweed from Fukuoka Prefecture, thus symbolizing the close bond of friendship between Fukuoka and Hawaii.

The participants were seen to be enthusiastically asking questions in the end, which Chef Makino happily answered. The participants commented , “I learned for the first time about the history of sushi rolls which I had been familiar with since childhood growing up in Hawaii”, “I enjoyed making sushi rolls for the first time” , and “I enjoyed learning about the background of the Ariake nori (seaweed) used for the sushi rolls”.
