Port of Call by Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Training Squadron and Consul General Aoki’s Lecture
As part of their Overseas Training Cruise 2022, the JS Kashima and JS Shimakaze, with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Training Squadron, arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Saturday, August 6th. After a three-day visit, they left port to carry out their training program on Tuesday, August 9th.
The JS Kashima and JS Shimakaze are manned by a full crew of approximately 530 personnel, including approximately 160 trainees who recently graduated from the 72nd General Officer Candidate Course in March.
The Training Squadron and the two ships embarked on its Overseas Training Cruise from their homeport of Yokosuka, Kanagawa on April 24th, followed by a short stop at Katsuren, Okinawa. Before arriving at Pearl Harbor, the ships made eight ports of call in seven countries, including Colombo in Sri Lanka, Salalah in Oman, Djibouti in Djibouti, Toulon in France, London and Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, Norfork in the United States, and Panama City in Panama. After departing Honolulu, they are scheduled to return to Yokosuka on August 22nd.
On August 8th, while JS Kashima and JS Shimakaze were docked in Pearl Harbor, Consul General Aoki greeted the trainees and delivered a lecture about the history of Japan-Hawaii relations. Also, members from the Hawaii Meijikai, the United Japanese Society of Hawaii and the Japan-America Society of Hawaii gathered at Pearl Harbor to welcome the arriving trainees and crew, and bid them farewell as the ships departed.
