Traditional Japanese craft "Amezaiku" at the New Year’s Ohana Festival!
On January 15 (Sun), the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu participated in the New Year’s Ohana Festival at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i. Our booth provided Japan travel info, Yukata & Jinbei (traditional Japanese summer wear) dressing for kids and an “Amezaiku” demonstration. Japanese candy craft artist, Chika Tanaka from Candy Art Hawaii, quickly created taffy-like sugar sculptures before the hot candy hardened. She molded the candy into different animals, such as a rabbit or dragon, on a stick skillfully using her hands and a pair of scissors. Her stunning performance drew a lot of attention from the audience.
Consul General Aoki also attended the opening ceremony of the 71st Cherry Blossom Festival which was also held at the Ohana Festival and gave his message of encouragement to the 71th Cherry Blossom Festival contestants.
Thank you very much to everyone who stopped by our booth! We hope to see you next year!
