2023 Fall Imperial Decoration recipient Mr. Akemi Kurokawa’s visit to the Consulate General

On December 12, 2023, Mr. Akemi Kurokawa, recipient of the 2023 Fall Imperial Decoration, visited the Consulate General.
Mr. Kurokawa held various posts including the president of the Prince Hotel Waikiki, president of Mauna Kea Resort and director of the Japan-American Society of Hawaii. He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays in the 2023 Fall Imperial Decoration for his contributions in promoting the growth and development of Japanese culture in Hawaii. On November 13, he was conferred the award at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and received an audience by His Majesty the Emperor at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
Mr. Kurokawa was the longtime president of the Urasenke Tankokai Hawaii Association where his activities included the maintenance and preservation of Hawaii’s teahouses. While he was a trustee of the Honolulu Museum of Art, he lead Hawaii’s first successful large-scale “Contemporary Tea Ceremony” exhibition, greatly contributing to the mutual understanding between the United States and Japan.
Upon receiving Mr. Kurokawa, Consul General Kodama congratulated and extended gratitude for his long-lasting dedication over the years. Mr. Kurokawa expressed his pleasure in being able to utilize his connections and knowledge gained as a businessperson to contribute to the growth and development of Japanese tea ceremony culture.
