Ehime Maru Memorial Ceremony
On February 9, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) held a memorial service for the Ehime Maru in front of the Ehime Maru Memorial at Kakaako Waterfront Park and, for the first time in four years after the of COVID-19 pandemic, attended by participants from Japan.
Around 100 people from Japan and Hawaii attended the ceremony, including representatives for the bereaved family, Ehime Governor NAKAMURA Tokihiro, Hawaii Lieutenant Governor Luke, Honolulu City and County Mayor Blangiardi, and Uwajima City Superintendent of Education KANASE Satoshi (on behalf of Uwajima Mayor). Consul General Kodama, Deputy Consul General Izawa and Consul Kajiya attended the ceremony from Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu.
The participants offered condolences to the victims and their bereaved families and expressed determination to further deepen the friendship between Ehime Prefecture, the State of Hawaii, and the cities of Uwajima and Honolulu.
They also expressed gratitude to the Ehime Maru Memorial Association and others for maintaining and taking care for the memorial.
