Message from Consul General Kodama: Commemorating the Maui Wildfires
2024/8/8
Today, I solemnly remember the anniversary of the devastating wildfires that swept through Maui on August 8, 2023. On behalf of the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu, I extend our deepest sympathies to all who were affected. Our hearts are with the resilient community of Maui as they continue to rebuild and recover from this tragedy.
I am aware that many officials and community leaders are working on the reconstruction of the affected areas and their future. They are making step-by-step progress towards the recovery, and last month we heard that all of the affected families and individuals staying at temporary lodgings in hotels have been able to move into longer-term housing, a crucial step towards restoring normalcy and rebuilding their lives.
The Government of Japan donated two million US dollars in humanitarian aid to support Maui’s recovery from the wildfire. This gesture reflects our deep appreciation for the generosity and support that we received from Hawaii after the East Japan Earthquake in Tohoku area in 2011. We also support the invitation programs for Maui students and experts to Japan arranged by the U.S.-Japan Council. The spirit of “KIZUNA (絆)”, the unbreakable bond of fellowship between Japan and Hawaii, remains stronger than ever. We stand together in solidarity and vow to continue to support our friends in Hawaii today and in the future.
