On February 9, 2025, the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) held a memorial service for the Ehime Maru in front of the Ehime Maru Memorial at Kakaako Waterfront Park.
On February 9, 2001 (Hawaii Time), the training ship “Ehime Maru” (with 35 students on board) of Uwajima Fisheries High School in Ehime Prefecture was struck by the USS Greeneville, which surfaced in an emergency. The vessel sank off Oahu, Hawaii, resulting in the loss of nine students and crew members.
Approximately 100 attendees from both Japan and Hawaii were present, including representatives for the bereaved families, Uwajima Mayor Mr. OKAHARA Fumiaki; Hawaii Lieutenant Governor Ms. Sylvia Luke; and Consul General  KODAMA Yoshinori and Mrs. KODAMA, who attended the ceremony from Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu.
The participants offered their condolences to the victims and their bereaved families and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the friendship between Ehime Prefecture, the State of Hawaii, and the cities of Uwajima and Honolulu, and to passing this bond  on future generations.
One of the representatives for the bereaved families expressed her appreciation for the ongoing exchanges between Japan and Hawaii, which have been a source of comfort for the bereaved families, and extended her gratitude to the Ehime Maru Memorial Association and others who maintain and care for the memorial daily, as well as to all those who participated in the ceremony.
