Participation in Makiki Cemetery’s Obon Memorial Service

DCG Haruta at Makiki cemetery
Deputy Consul General HARUTA Hiroki attended the Obon Memorial Service at Makiki Cemetery on 7/14 at which he offered words of condolences and paid his respects to all the Japanese Americans and Japanese pioneers laid to rest there. This annual Memorial Service is organized by the United Japanese Society of Hawaii and supported by other organizations such as the Hawaii Buddhist Council.

Located in Honolulu’s Makiki district, which was once home to many Japanese Americans, the Makiki Cemetery is considered the oldest Japanese-American collective cemetery outside of Japan. Aside from the general cemetery, there are three gravesites associated with the history of the Japan-U.S relationship; the “Gannenmono” Memorial, the Hawaii Japanese Immigrant Memorial, and the Japanese Imperial Navy Cemetery.
