Presentation of 2025 Consul General’s Commendation to Hawaii Japanese Center

On August 1, the Consulate General of Japan in Honolulu presented the Commendation of the Consul General to the Hawaii Japanese Center (Hilo, the island of Hawaii).
The Hawaii Japanese Center has contributed significantly to the advancement of the status of Japanese Americans by preserving, exhibiting, and passing on the history and traditions of Japanese immigrants — from the early immigration period through the prewar, wartime, and postwar eras. The Center also has served as a community hub, playing an important role in deepening mutual understanding between Japan and the United States within the local society. Additionally, the Center has deeply partnered with the Consulate General and been currently hosting the Japan Foundation's traveling exhibition “Yokai Parade” (until Saturday, August 30). The Commendation Ceremony was held during the opening reception for the exhibition, warmly attended by many related parties.
During the award presentation, Deputy Consul General Hiroki Haruta offered his congratulations and expressed his deep respect for the Center’s efforts. He noted that the Hawaii Japanese Center, through its inclusive initiatives that engage not only the Japanese American community but the broader local population, has worked to pass on Japanese immigrants' legacy to future generations. He praised the Center’s significant contributions to fostering friendship and goodwill between Japan and Hawaii, as well as Japan and the U.S.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Arnold Hiura, Executive Director of the Hawaii Japanese Center expressed great appreciation at receiving such a prestigious commendation. He stated that the award was a meaningful recognition of the Center’s past efforts and affirmed the Center’s continued commitment to promoting Japanese culture and serving the local community.
