Prize winners
On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the award ceremony for the 19th JAL Foundation World Children’s Haiku Contest was held at the Consul General’s official residence. Consul General Chotoku delivered congratulatory remarks to the five students who received the Grand Prize and the eleven students who received other awards while describing Japanese Haiku culture and introducing a memorable haiku work that his grandmother composed for him over 30 years ago. The ceremony was marked by a warm atmosphere as the children’s works, reflecting their creativity and sensitivity, were presented.
In Hawaii, haiku has become widely incorporated into school education, providing children with opportunities to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture and the unique forms of expression found in the Japanese language. Through haiku, students also learn to express their own perspectives and emotions in words, fostering creativity and sensitivity. This year’s contest once again featured many works that captured the children’s personal discoveries and honest feelings, reflecting the growing depth and reach of haiku education through the contest.
