New Year Message from Consul General Kodama

At the very beginning of the new year, major earthquakes occurred in the Noto Peninsula in Japan, resulting in the loss of many lives. I would like to express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and convey my sincere sympathies to the countless many who were affected by the disaster. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and emergency support to the affected areas are underway. I wish to extend my highest respect to those involved in these efforts, as they tirelessly work day and night.

Furthermore, there was an airplane collision at Haneda Airport, where Japan Coast Guard officers lost their lives while on duty, and I would like to express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

We have received warm messages of sympathy from around the world, including U.S. President Joe Biden, following the earthquake. We are also receiving numerous offers of assistance, for which we are deeply grateful. At present, efforts are being concentrated on search and rescue operations, and we are keeping a close watch to see how these efforts will be connected to recovery endeavors.

Last year in August, wildfires broke out on Maui Island, the effects of which continue to impact a great number of people there. I reiterate my deepest condolences to the bereaved families, as well as extend my sincere sympathies to those who have suffered loss from the disaster. We will continue to prioritize how the Consulate General of Japan can contribute to the ongoing recovery efforts. Presently, we are considering how we can share Japan’s experience in disaster recovery, and are planning specific projects. We would like to continue to listen to opinions and advice from those involved.

The number of tourists coming to Hawaii from Japan has been steadily recovering; however, it is still not at pre-pandemic levels. I believe that increased travel and exchange are fundamental to enhancing mutual understanding and fostering friendship. In order to increase travel between Japan and Hawaii, we will work on facilitating relevant procedures, as well as promoting travel through educational exchange and sister relations. I will endeavor to further people-to-people exchanges by promoting investment and business cooperation from Japan.

The international situation is becoming increasingly complex. Hawaii, where the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command is located, holds a key position in the security of the region. In order to enhance Japan’s peace and security, as well as to build a free and open international order based on the rule of law, it is essential to strengthen and maintain the Japan-U.S. security alliance, as well as to enhance Japan-U.S.-Republic of Korea partnership and Japan-U.S.-Australia-India cooperation. I am committed to doing my part, to that end, here in Hawaii.

We will continue to do our utmost to be a Consulate-General the local communities here can rely upon.
While praying for the swift recovery of disaster-affected regions, I wish you all a fulfilling new year.
