On Saturday, April 29, 2023 (JST), the Government of Japan announced it will confer the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star on David Yutaka Ige, the former Governor of the State of Hawaii. The Decoration is in recognition of his significant contributions to promoting regional exchanges and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.

Mr. David Yutaka Ige served as the Governor of the State of Hawaii from 2014 to 2022. During his tenure as governor, Mr. Ige initiated and promoted exchanges between Japan and Hawaii in a wide range of fields, including people-to-people exchanges through sister-state, economic and tourism. Under Mr. Ige’s leadership, the State of Hawaii also established new sister-state relations with Hokkaido and Yamaguchi Prefectures.
