We are now accepting applications for the MEXT Research Student Scholarship.

Please note that applications using any other application form other than the For U.S.A will be rejected.
Successful candidates who pass the document screening may be required to take a written exam on the morning of Wednesday, June 17, 2026, if they plan to take classes in Japanese or both Japanese or English. Candidates who plan to take classes exclusively in English may be except from taking the written exam.
Please be advised that candidates who plan to take classes in Japanese or in both Japanese and English will need to pass the exam to maintain their candidacy.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan offers scholarships to international students who wish to study in graduate courses at Japanese universities as Research Students (either as degree seeking or non-degree seeking) under the MEXT Scholarship Program.
Dates are subject to change without notice.

- Download and complete the Application Forms for the Research Student Scholarship.
- Number each document as instructed in the Application Guidelines.
- Mail or hand-deliver your application packet no later than 3:30 pm on Friday, June 5 to the University of Hawaii’s Center for Japanese Studies, Moore Hall 216.
- Notify the consulate at the email address below if you plan to mail in your application packet. Be sure to keep your postal tracking number.
